Oak Valley Estate was founded in 1898 by Sir Antonie Viljoen, a medical doctor who graduated from Edinburgh University in Scotland.
This historic estate in South Africa’s cool climate Elgin Valley is more than just a winery. Founded in 1898 the farm is still family run and takes its name from the founders’ love of oak trees, 4,000 of which are still planted on the estate today. Among the vines are apple and pear orchards, greenhouses packed with fresh cut flowers, cattle, free range acorn fed pigs and 30km of mountain biking trails. Oak Valley was also the first in the Overberg to achieve Champion status for the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative where we undertook to preserve all fynbos from future development on the property.
Forty-eight hectares of vineyards are planted predominately with Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. They are going down in the SA wine history books for their superior Chardonnay and Pinot Noir which have been been classified by South Africa’s go to online wine review publication: Top Wine SA.
They have been named in their Top 10 SA Chardonnay and Top 10 SA Pinot Noir lists as well as being ranked in the top 20 of their Top White Wine Cellars of South Africa.

High on the southern slopes of the Groenland Mountains lies an isolated vineyard exposed to the elements of our cold climate. Wind whistles through the neighbouring fynbos, the only sound that breaks this eerie silence at altitude. The Oak Valley Pinot Noir grapes take comfort in austerity. It thrives on hardship. And it lives alone in the Sounds of Silence.
Sweet cherry, violet and rose petal aromas. The palate displays an abundance of fresh cranberry and ripe cherry. These bright red berry characters are offset by beautiful acidity resulting in excellent freshness. The careful use of French oak has led to fine tannins and a light oak spice on the finish.
Grapes: Pinot Noir Alcohol: 13.87%
Oak Valley Estate Shiraz 2014

The shiraz vines are grown on gravelly soils on North facing slopes and work hard to produce some excellent fruit. A rich, rounded yet elegantly fresh style of Shiraz, reminiscent of the northern Rhone where fruit forwardness is key. Floral aromas of blue violets with rich cranberry fruit. Palate expresses fresh raspberry and cranberry medley with lingering dark chocolate and sweet spicy finish. Ultra soft and silky tannins due, in part, to careful use of new oak. Drinking well now, with further cellaring potential for a few more years.
