Situated in the Groenfontein Valley not far from Calitzdorp and the stunning Swartberg Pass, Peter and Yvonne are living their dream of handcrafting port-style wines and a stunning red made from a blend of Portuguese varieties. The main challenges to making wine here in this beautiful valley is from the competition for grapes by both baboons and birds! Extensive netting for the birds and electric fences for the baboons helps.
Brand new to Newton Wines and the UK.
Their story
Peter and Yvonne Bayly headed into this secluded valley over a decade ago to fulfil their lifelong dream of crafting artisanal wines and “live free-range” in one of the most secluded areas of South Africa.

Peter Bayly III 2012/2013/2015

A blend of three port varieties making this a rich yet still refined and elegant wine. The wine was born from a spark of curiosity and the fact that no one had tried to blend these varieties together as a table wine in South Africa at that time. The vineyard’s unique location allows for a long slow ripening season, resulting in concentrated fruit and an elegant wine with good acidity, superb structure, great for accompanying hearty dishes and most importantly, a good glass to enjoy and share with friends, family or passers-by.
Grapes: Tinta Barroca, Touriga Nacional, Souzou Alcohol: 14%Peter Bayly Tinta Barroca 2015
I was fortunate enough to buy and I am very excited by this lovely brooding wine which is both complex and yet easy to drink. Think earthy autumn forest with berry fruits and well integrated oak giving a touch of vanilla and spice. Limited stock.
Grapes: Tinta Barroca Alcohol: 13.5%Peter Bayly Cape White

A shy bouquet of roast almond, crushed oats and hints of orange blossom and lemon rind, unfolds into an ethereal, complex and lengthy palate. Peach pip, dried apricot, Seville marmalade, roast almonds and hints of spice taunt the senses, while the Port ends with a characteristically dry finish. Serve chilled or makes wonderful long drinks with ice, fruit and tonic or soda.

Grapes: Chenin Blanc Alcohol: 17%Peter Bayly Cape Vintage 2012
A pitch black centre and garnet hued rim invites one into a bouquet bursting with aromas of black hedgerow fruits, plum, “fynbos”, spices and undertones of new leather, and brandied apricots. Black cherry, macerated brambles, plump fresh plums, cracked pepper, all-spice, liquorice and “meaty” undertones all vie for attention from the taste buds. The palate is complex, dense and the finish is long and balanced with hints of brandied apricot and liquorice, characteristic of only the finest Cape Vintage Port. Available in 37.5cl bottles.
Grapes: Touriga Naçional 44%, Tinta Barroca 30%, Souzão 26% Alcohol: 19%
Peter Bayly LBV 2008

An inky black elixir with brick red edge, this wine greets one with a melange of bright mulling spice, brandied cherry, prune, molasses and herb aromas. The palate is lusciously smooth with gentle warming spirit, layers of black hedgerow fruits, kirsch, allspice, hints of caramel and toasted almond. Last ever bottles remaining!
Grapes: Touriga Naçional, Tinta Barroca, Souzão Alcohol: 18.5%Peter Bayly Chenin Blanc 2018
Made from the very dry 2018 vintage which produced very small berries. This Chenin Blanc is packed with flavour and interest with flavours of crisp cox apples, then guava and almost almond pastry sweetness blend but the wine is still dry and long in the finish.
