Lynx Wines

Franschhoek, South Africa

Dieter Sellmeyer started up this delightful small estate on the edge of Franschhoek in 1999. Dieter traded his life as an engineer to start a vineyard, which meant grubbing up the planted table grapes, replanting and then producing his first vintage in 2002.

In 2017 Lynx Estate was bought from Dieter by Manuel and Brigitte Konen. Helgard joined Lynx Wines in October 2010 as Assistant Winemaker. In April 2014 he was promoted to Winemaker and in January 2017 to General Manager and Winemaker when Dieter retired.

In the wine cellar, Helgard and the winemaking team still use many traditional appliances such as the open concrete tanks for fermenting the grapes or the hand-operated basket press. The open tanks give Lynx wines the unique taste of the vineyard grapes, which they are so well known for. In addition, they do the so-called Punch Downs. Here, the grapes are crushed by hand at regular intervals, so that we receive a controlled fermentation. Lynx use both steel tanks and French oak barrels in their wine cellar, with all their reds ripening in the latter.

Blanc de Noir 2022

Lynx Wines available through Newton Wines, Crediton

I have been thoroughly enjoying this wine during the year and it is running out fast! A beautiful dry rose made from 100% Merlot grapes, this has a touch of ripe peach and strawberries on the nose leading to a delicious summer berry mouth fill which is all balanced nicely with good acidity and structure. A wine that offers great quality and therefore value at its price point.

Grapes: Merlot    Alcohol: 12.5

Lynx Viognier 2020

SOLD OUT, more due in April. Pierre and the team have made a subtle and complex Viognier. The grapes are picked early so as to keep some freshness and then 50% is barrel fermented and aged. So layers of pineapple, peach and apricot develop in the mouth with spice and oak. Although rich, fruity and floral this is delightfully firm and dry. Well worth its 4 Star Platters rating.

Grapes: Viognier 100%    Alcohol: 13.5

Vino Blanco 2018

A totally dry, unwooded, white blend of Viognier and Grenache Blanc. Fresh floral nose with green apple, pear and apricot following through to a spicy and crisp finish. Unfortunately this wine has been discontinued, I have the last remaining bottles left and it tastes great!

Grapes: Viognier, Grenache Blanc, Roussanne    Alcohol: 13

The Tinto 2019

The winemaker’s own blend of Cab Sauv, Merlot, Cab Franc, Petit Verdot, Shiraz and Mourvèdre. Unassuming, well balanced fruit driven red blend with rustic charm. This has been aged for about six months in old oak which allows the wine to develop but still with lovely blackberry and blackcurrant fruit to the fore. It has won the Best Value Award from WINE Magazine 3 years running now. Fantastic value!

Grapes: Cab Sauv, Merlot, Cab Franc, Petit Verdot, Shiraz and Mourvèdre    Alcohol: 13.5

Lynx SMG 2019

Lynx SMG available through Newton Wines, Crediton

A rich and complex blend of Shiraz, Mourvèdre and Grenache. This wine has all the richness and body of a Shiraz, with rustic Mourvèdre to fill the gaps! With a splash of Viognier to soften – this is a complex rich and lengthy wine.

Grapes: 70% Shiraz, 15% Mourvèdre, 15% Grenache    Alcohol: 14

Lynx Passion 2018

This is a blend of four Bordeaux varietals – again showing Lynx’s pedigree. Lovely, fresh and complex nose of blackcurrant and spice tinged with mint. Sweet fragrant blackcurrant continues to the palate supported by cedar spice and an almost bittersweet chocolate finish. A wine that is made to drink now but I can see this ageing extremely well.

Grapes: 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Cabernet Franc, 19% Merlot und 19% Petit Verdot    Alcohol: 14.5

Lynx Shiraz 2018

Lynx Shiraz avaible through Newton Wines

This wine is 100% Shiraz with all the grapes coming from the Estate. On the nose there is blackcurrants and almonds. The fruit flavours continue on the pallet and is balanced with spice, white pepper and liquorice. The finish leaves you with plenty of Autumn fruit with hints of a cigar box. Can be kept upto 7 years.

Grapes: Shiraz    Alcohol: 14.5

Lynx Pinot Noir 2018

This wine is made from a 100% Estate grown Pinot Noir. Typically, warmer climate Pinot Noir gives a lot of bright red berries on the nose with hints of sour cherries. Behind all of this are hints of forest flour. The wine is extremely elegant on the palate with soft tannins and medium-long finish.

Grapes: Pinot Noir    Alcohol: 13

Lynx Vision 2018

This blend combines the lush summer red fruits typical of Grenache with the more blackcurrent and blackberry fruits associated with Cabernet. The wine is full, bright and fresh, perfect for those Spring and Summer BBQs/Braais!

Lynx Cabernet Franc 2019

Often picked by “those who know” as their favourite Cabernet Franc and is also a favourite of mine. Very fresh on the nose with blackberry fruit and wild herb perfume. The palate is smooth and rich with black fruits, smoke and liquorice. Ripe and fine grained tannins give the wine structure and backbone. A long finish with some bitter chocolate notes. Very limited amounts left!

Grapes: Cabernet Franc    Alcohol: 14.5

Lynx Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

This wine has blackcurrant and blackberry fruit, lovely earthy mineral structure and a lovely seamless wood integration providing slightly savoury and tobacco notes. A silky finish with hints of cassis. Ageing potential from 5 to 8 years.
